Security and Privacy News
1) Watch out for GST account scam texts
As we head into income tax season, watch for texts, as shown in the screenshot shared by astute Tech Talk listener Rainier, that claim there's an available update to your GST account, and encourage you to click on a link.
That link takes you to a fake Interac website, at wcrcas.comwhich I traced to a web-hosting platform in Poland.
The webpage claims you have a pending deposit of — in this case — $301.98 from the Government of Canada, and displays a list of Canadian banks and credit unions…
If you click on any of the banks or credit unions, it takes you to a fake log-in page for that institution, where the overseas scammers are hoping you'll give then your log-in info.
Scams like this are why most banks and credit unions WIILL NO LONGER let you log in with just your password, and now insist on two factor authentication, where email or text you a code to prove it's you trying to log in.
the scammers are hoping you use the same password for your bank or credit union, as you do for your email account, so they can get into that account and then get a code from the bank, so they can get into your bank account and steal your money as well as your identity.
NEVER click on links in texts or emails like this — they're ALL scams.
2) Watch out for scam emails that claim to be from Microsoft advising that your email will be decativated if you don't take action
In the past week, many of us have received one or more of these emails, most of them, coming from @aol.com addresses, as shown in the screenshots below…
The "Click here" link in the screenshot above takes you to a fake Microsoft account log-in page at https://come.ac/mchrsft — but .ac is the web-domain for the Ascension Islands in the South Pacific!
The "Continue here" link in the screenshot above takes you to a fake Microsoft account log-in page hosted on a website at https://qrco.de — but .de is the web-domain for Germany!
As well as coming from @aol.com addresses (AOL is the oldest email provider in the USA that's still operating), the emails often use slight variations of Microsoft and Outlook (such as M!crosoft or 0UTL00K) in an effort to evade junk mail filters. The emails are also poorly written.
NEVER click on links in emails like this!
The links all take you to fake Microsoft log-in pages that look like this…
…if you give them your email address and password, the hackers will immediately gain access to your email account, and they'll then start sending an email to everyone in your address book, asking if they shop on Amazon.
The scammers will also download a copy of all your contacts and create a new email address that is one letter different from yours, and they'll use that if you catch onto the scam and lock them out of your account.
Anyone who replies will be asked (by the scammers posing as you) to buy Amazon gift cards for one of your relative's birthday. The explanation they give for the request is that your credit card has been compromised and is being replaced, but the replacement won't be here for a few days and her birthday is tomorrow.
If any of your contacts agree to do this, the scammers posing as you will send them the supposed email address of the birthday relative along with a greeting, and ask them to buy the gift cards online and send them to the relative with the greeting on your behalf.
The email address of the relative is actually owned by the scammers, and when the Amazon gift cards digitally arrive, they'll immediately use them to buy stuff that they can quickly sell online.
If anyone ask you to buy gift cards on their behalf, it's a scam.
If you don't believe us, phone or text (do NOT email) the person, and ask them.
To prevent scammers from getting into your email account if you get tricked into giving-out your password, go to your account settings and turn on two-factor authentication. Once you've done that, anytime you want to access your emails on a new device, you'll be sent a code by text to your mobile phone to confirm its you, which the scammers won't be able to do.
3) Apple has released special updates for some older iPhones, Macs, and Apple Watches that are too old to run OS 26
The special updates, which are to enable older devices to continue using iMessage and FaceTime, come one week after Apple released iOS.iPadOS 26.2.1 to fix a raft of bugs and to enable support for the long-awaited 2nd-gen AirTags.
Interrestingly, the special updates — iOS 16.7.14 and iPadOS 16.7.14 — are for iPhones and iPads that stopped being supported two years ago, and not for models that lost support last fall.
For owners of older Macs, macOS Big Sur has been updated to macOS 11.7.11 update. Macs officially limited to macOS Big Sur include 2014 MacBook Pro models and 2014 iMacs, among others.
For owners of older Apple Watch models, watchOS 10.6.2 update has been released for the original Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 4, and Apple Watch Series 5, and there's also watchOS 9.6.4 for even older Apple Watch models.
To ensure your device has the latest available update, go to Settings> General> Software Update.

5) Google has agreed to pay $68 million USD to settle allegations that its voice assistant eavesdropped on users
Google has agreed to pay $68 million USD to settle a class-action lawsuit that alleged the tech giant's voice assistant illegally recorded users and then shared their private conversations with advertisers.
The settlement stems from a lawsuit filed by several Google device owners who claimed their conversations had been recorded without their knowledge. While Google stated that its voice assistant would only register people's speech when consumers uttered an activation phrase, such as "Hey Google," the consumers claimed that their devices recorded them even without using such language.
Some claimants alleged the Google devices recorded private conversations about financial issues, personal decisions and employment.
Google denied wrongdoing, but settled to avoid the risk, cost and uncertainty of litigation, court papers show. The Mountain View, California-based company is not commenting.
The settlement covers Americans who bought Google devices since May 18, 2016, and if the settlement is approved, Google will place $68 million in a fund that will pay all consumer claims, as well as court-approved attorneys' fees, and other costs.
Analysts say Google device owners in the USA will likely get about $40 per device.

10) How to watch the Olympics and Super Bowl LV, if you don't have a cable TV subscription
The 2026 Winter Olympics got underway on Friday night in Milano and-Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy and will continue through February 26th.
2,900 athletes from more than 90 countries — including Team Canada's 207 athletes (with more female athletes than malke athletes for the first time) — are competing in 116 medal events across eight sports and 16 disciplines, including the Olympic debut of ski mountaineering.
CBC is broadcasting the Winter Games, but because there are so many events going on at the same time, they've once again partnered with both TSN and Sportsnet to cover all the sports.
If you don't have a cable TV subscription, you can watch the Olympics live on the CBC Gem app, but you'll have to create a free account.
CBC Gem has unskippale ads, but they offer a $6/month ad-free version, and you can also get a seven-day free trial, which would take you halfway through the Olympics!
If the competitions which you want to watch are being shown on TSN or Sportsnet, you can buy a 30-day subscription to the TSN+ and/or Sportsnet+ streaming services, which you can watch via the app or website.
  • TSN+ is $8/month or you can currently get six months for $33
  • Sportsnet+ is $30/month

11a) If you have dual Canada and UK or Ireland citizenship, you can only now travel there with your UK or Irish passport
A big change has been made to the UK's ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) system, affecting people who are dual citizens with British or Irish citizenship.
Here's a screenshot of part of the updated UK ETA website (at gov.uk/eta)…
The big change is that Canadians (or others) who are dual citizens with British or Irish citizenship, do not need an ETA, but now must use their British or Irish passport when leaving Canada heading to the UK or Ireland, and must use that same British or Irish passport to get into the UK or Ireland.
if you try to use a Canadian passport to leave Canada for Britain or Ireland, you will find that you will not be able to check in for your flight, and if you arrive ship or rail, you will not be allowed in if you use your Canadian passport unless you have paid for an (expensive) Certificate of Entitlement — you must now use your British or Irish passport.
If you're a dual citizen and want to use your Canadian passport to get into the UK or Ireland…
…you'll have to apply for a digital Certificate of Entitlement, which currently costs a whopping £589 — that's $1099 CAD, and if you want to apply from here in Victoria (instead of going to Vancouver), you'll have to pay an additional service fee of $383, for a total cost of $1482 CAD!
If you're a dual citizen with British or Irish citizenship…

11b) If you're heading to the UK, you now need a £16 online ETA to get into England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland
An ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a new digital travel permit that is mandatory for citizens of countries that can visit England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland without a visa for short trips. This includes Canadian citizens.
ETA's cost £16 — that's about $30 CAD.
A UK ETA is valid for multiple visits for either two years, or when your passport expires — whichever comes first.
Applying for a UK ETA is entirely online and paperless. Canadian applicants can complete the application in less than 20 minutes. You do not need to visit consulates or visa offices for an in-person interview or to submit documents. Important note: in order to get a UK ETA, your passport must not expire within six months of your expected departure from the UK.
It usuallly takes three days to process an ETA application. You'll receive a decision, whether approved or rejected, via the email address you provide when applying. Most airlines flying to the UK now require you to provide proof that you have an ETA (unless you have a British or Irish passport), before they'll let you check-in. Check-out the info below, and then you can apply for an ETA online via their app…

14) There's now a free Word-style document editor — cDox — that's hosted here in Canada, with no AI training or data extraction.
If you don't want to pay for Microsoft Word, and aren't comfortable with the privacy invasion that's part of using Google Docs, you can now use all-Canadian cDox, which is a free web-based document creating and editing platform that stores your documents on a server in Montreal.
It's brand new, so it might be missing some features or have limitations that make it not suitable for you, but if you're a light user of documents, check it out at cDox.ca.
Users are currently limited to 50MB of free document storage, which can get used-up pretty quickly, but larger paid storage options will be coming soon.
cDox is also currently only web-based — no software or app versions — but those are on the way.
And, there are currently also no collaboration options, but those, too, are in the works.

15) Apple is expected to release new MacBook Pro's later this month when it releases macOS 26.3
Apple is widely anticipated to be preparing an update to the MacBook Pro line for the early stages of 2026. While it didn't happen in January, that launch should occur relatively soon.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman continues pressing the idea that Apple's introduction of its M5 Pro and M5 Max models of MacBook Pro will arrive alongside the update for macOS Tahoe 26.3. While the update won't necessarily happen on the same day that the 26.3 generation of software updates ship, the models will theoretically arrive in the same timeframe.

We said in 2025 that the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro refresh would coincide with the release of macOS 26.3, and a notable leaker agrees with that timetable that we set.

16) Noted filmaker Darren Aronofsky and TIME magazine have made an AI-created historical docudrama — and the reviews are horrible
Filmmaker Darren Aronofsky’s AI studio Primordial Soup and Time magazine have released the first two episodes of On This Day: 1776. The year-long series of short-form videos features short vignettes describing what happened on that day of the American Revolution 250 years ago, but it does so using “a variety of AI tools” to produce photorealistic scenes containing avatars of historical figures like George Washington, Thomas Paine, and Benjamin Franklin.
In announcing the series, Time Studios President Ben Bitonti said the project provides “a glimpse at what thoughtful, creative, artist-led use of AI can look like—not replacing craft but expanding what’s possible and allowing storytellers to go places they simply couldn’t before.”
Critics have been blunt. CNET says that this “AI slop is ruining American history,” calling the videos a “hellish broth of machine-driven AI slop and bad human choices.” The Guardian lamented that the “once-lauded director of Black Swan and The Wrestler has drowned himself in AI slop”, calling the series “embarrassing,” “terrible,” and “ugly as sin.” You can decide for yourself at the second link below…

17) Judge tosses case after lawyer uses AI to find (fake) case law and then uses AI to write an elaborate explanation and apology
Frustrated by fake citations and flowery prose packed with “out-of-left-field” references to ancient libraries and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, a New York federal judge took the rare step of terminating a case this week due to a lawyer’s repeated misuse of AI when drafting filings.
In an order on Thursday, district judge Katherine Polk Failla ruled that the extraordinary sanctions were warranted after an attorney, Steven Feldman, kept responding to requests to correct his filings with documents containing fake citations.
Another passage Failla highlighted as “raising the Court’s eyebrows” curiously invoked a Bible passage about divine judgment as a means of acknowledging the lawyer’s breach of duty in not catching the fake citations:
“Your Honor, in the ancient libraries of Ashurbanipal, scribes carried their stylus as both tool and sacred trust—understanding that every mark upon clay would endure long beyond their mortal span. As the role the mark (x) in Ezekiel Chapter 9, that marked the foreheads with a tav (x) of blood and ink, bear the same solemn recognition: that the written word carries power to preserve or condemn, to build or destroy, and leaves an indelible mark which cannot be erased but should be withdrawn, let it lead other to think these citations were correct.
I have failed in that sacred trust. The errors in my memorandum, however inadvertent, have diminished the integrity of the record and the dignity of these proceedings. Like the scribes of antiquity who bore their stylus as both privilege and burden, I understand that legal authorship demands more than mere competence—it requires absolute fidelity to truth and precision in every mark upon the page.”

19) Mac tip: how to make text and other things bigger on a Mac
First and foremost the biggest (no pun intended) change you can make for Mac users with challenges readng the screen, is to increase the overall size of the display. Go to System Settings → Displays.
By default, Apple gives you four simple display sizes to choose from: the default settings, and the three other options ranging from "Larger Text" to "More Space". The second largest option is the best to start with. This will make everything on the screen bigger and more readable.
Note that the "Larger Text" option can sometime hide some important buttons on smaller screens like the 13" MacBook Airs.
You can set a single preferred size for text across multiple apps and on the Mac desktop.
  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click Accessibility in the sidebar.
  1. Click Display, scroll down to Text, then click “Text size.”
  1. Drag the slider to the right to increase the text size on the desktop, in app sidebars, and in the apps listed (if they are set to Use Preferred Reading Size). To set a different text size for any of the apps listed, click the pop-up menu next to the app, then choose a size.
Note: If an app is set to Customized in App, a unique text size has been set in that app’s settings. If you change the app’s text size in System Settings, it replaces the text size customization you set in the app.

20) How to factory-reset an Apple AirTag so someone else can use it
Every AirTag can be associated with only a single Apple Account, so if you want to gift your AirTag to another person, you'll need to reset it.
While this does take a little effort, the whole process can be done in about a minute…
  1. Hold your AirTag with the silver battery cover face up
  1. Using firm pressure, press down on the battery cover with your thumbs and rotate the cover clockwise until it unlocks from the AirTag
  1. Remove the battery and wait for five seconds
  1. Replace the battery — it will make a sound alerting you that it is connected
  1. Repeat the process four more times for a total of five removals and insertions
  1. On the fifth time, the AirTag will make a different noise, signaling that it has been reset — the AirTag 2 may take longer to make the sound, you may need to wait up to 12 seconds
  1. Replace the battery cover
  1. Using firm pressure, twist the battery cover clockwise until it seats securely within the AirTag
The person who's going to inherit the AirTag now needs only to open "Find My" on their iPhone or iPad, then go to "Items", and tap the + and follow the prompts.
21) The latest Bell, Telus, and Rogers Wi-Fi routers are providing noticably better internet than third-party routers
This is a big change from even a decade ago, when many people bought their own Wi-Fi router to get better coverage and speeds than what they got from the one supplied by Shaw/Rogers or Telus.
A survey by OpenSignal here in Canada has found that the current crop of Wi-Fi routers supplied by the major internet carriers — Telus, Rogers, and Bell — usually outperform third-party routers…

22) The TV industry is finally conceding that 8K sets are doomed
One by one, TV manufacturers have all given-up on 8K TV's.
Not because they don't deliver noticably superior quality video — they do — but because there's too little content being shot or streamed in 8K, and as a result, virtually no-one is willing to pay big bucks to buy one.
In 2012, Sharp brought the first 8K TV prototype to the CES trade show in Las Vegas. In 2015, the first 8K TVs started selling in Japan for 16 million yen (about $140,000 CAD), and in 2018, Samsung released the first 8K TVs in the US, starting at a more reasonable $3,500. By 2017, Dell had an 8K computer monitor. In 2019, LG released the first 8K OLED TV, further pushing the industry’s claim that 8K TVs were “the future”.
Fast-forward to 2026, and LG just confirmed that its stopped making any 8K sets, following similar decisions made earlier by Sony, TCL, and HiSense. Samsung is currently the only big name still selling 8K sets, although for how long is anybody's guess.
It wasn’t hard to predict that 8K TVs wouldn’t take off. In addition to being too expensive for many households, there has been virtually zero native 8K content available to make investing in an 8K display worthwhile. An ongoing lack of content was also easy to predict, given that there’s still a dearth of 4K content, and many streaming, broadcasting, and gaming users still rely on 1920×1080 resolution.
Gaming was supposed to be one of the best drivers for 8K adoption. The PlayStation 5 (PS5) Pro was originally marketed as supporting 8K. Sony officially rescinded that promise in June 2024, though. Due to bandwidth limitations, the PS5 Pro could only deliver 8K via Display Stream Compression over HDMI 2.1, making the feature incompatible with some 8K TVs.

Ars Technica

The TV industry finally concedes that the future may not be in 8K

With virtually no content and limited benefits, 8K TVs were doomed.

23) SpaceX has bought xAI, and plans to launch a massive satellite constellation to power it
SpaceX has officially acquired xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial‑intelligence company, in a move that dramatically fuses his space and AI ambitions. The combined entity is being positioned as a vertically integrated powerhouse spanning rockets, satellite internet, mobile communications, and large‑scale AI compute.
SpaceX has filed for authorization to launch up to one million satellites designed to function as orbital AI data centers. These satellites would:
  • Be powered by near‑constant solar energy
  • Interconnect through the Starlink network
  • Host compute modules launched via Starship
  • Form a massive, space‑based supercomputing network for xAI’s models
SpaceX describes this as the “lowest‑cost way to generate AI compute” within a few years.
The merger values the combined company at roughly $1.25 trillion USD, making it one of the largest corporate combinations ever. Why merge?
  • xAI has a high burn rate and needs massive compute resources
  • SpaceX has launch capacity, satellite infrastructure, and global communications
  • Together, they can build orbital data centers that bypass Earth‑based power and cooling constraints

Bell confirmed the figure in its fourth-quarter earnings release on Thursday. The company noted that subscriptions are up 26% year-over-year, driven by late-November premiere of its massively-popular Canadian LGBTQ+ hockey series, Heated Rivalry.
25) NASA has changed its mind, and now will allow Artemis astronauts to take iPhones to the Moon
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has revealed that the Crew-12 and Artemis II astronauts will be allowed to bring iPhones and other modern smartphones into orbit and beyond.
“NASA astronauts will soon fly with the latest smartphones, beginning with Crew-12 and Artemis II,” Isaacman wrote on X. “We are giving our crews the tools to capture special moments for their families and share inspiring images and video with the world.”
NASA astronauts have long captured amazing photos from the space station, but having a smartphone on hand will open up a world of video possibilities. This will likely be especially useful when astronauts are conducting an experiment or looking outside a window and see an interesting, transient phenomenon.
However, Isaacman said the decision to allow astronauts to bring iPhones is about more than just capturing cool new photos and videos. It’s part of his effort to challenge long-standing NASA rules and requirements.
“Just as important, we challenged long-standing processes and qualified modern hardware for spaceflight on an expedited timeline,” he wrote. “That operational urgency will serve NASA well as we pursue the highest-value science and research in orbit and on the lunar surface. This is a small step in the right direction.”

29) Kathryn's Paleontology News Item Of The Week: fossils challenge long-held belief that giant kangaroos couldn’t hop
Kathryn's Dad Joke: Why did the kangaroo stop drinking coffee? It made him too jumpy.
Scientists examining the fossil remains of giant prehistoric kangaroos have found that even animals weighing more than 200 kilograms, or 440 pounds, may still have been capable of hopping.
A new study led by researchers at the U.K.-based University of Manchester, working in collaboration with the University of Bristol and the Australian-based University of Melbourne, argued previous assumptions failed to account for anatomy differences.
Rather than relying solely on scaled-up versions of modern kangaroos, the team combined data from living animals with direct measurements from fossilized bone.
According to the results, published in the journal Scientific Reports, indicate that giant kangaroos were built differently in ways that could have allowed them to hop despite their massive size.
