1) Microsoft email accounts will stop working on older email clients next week, including older versions of Microsoft Outlook
If you've received an email like this from Microsoft, it's is not a scam!
Here's what this means: starting this coming Monday, the 16th, you'll no longer be able to send and receive emails to/from Microsoft-hosted email accounts (@outlook.com, @hotmail.com/.ca, and @live.ca/.com) on older email clients such as Windows Live Mail, Windows Mail, or older versions of Microsoft Outlook, including Outlook 2007, Outlook 2010, Outlook 2013, Outlook 2016, and Outlook 2019. Microsoft Outlook 2021 will continue to work.
Older third-party email clients like eM Client, Mailbird, ProtonMail and Airmail will also be affected by this important security upgrade. If you use Thunderbird, the most-recent version can still be used to access Microsoft email accounts, but only if you make a key configuration change, which is detailed in the Microsoft webpage below.
If you're using one of the affected email clients, you can use the free Outlook Mail app, or the Outlook software included in a Microsoft 365 subscription, to continue getting your email.
You can also go to outlook.com on a web-browser.
If you're using one of the affected email clients, you can use the free Outlook Mail app or the Outlook software included in a Microsoft 365 subscription, to continue getting your email.

Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps - Microsoft Support

For many years, applications have used Basic Authentication to connect to servers, services, and API endpoints. Basic Authentication simply means the application sends a username and password with every request, and those credentials are also often stored or saved on the user’s device. Traditionally, Basic Authentication is enabled by default on most servers or services and is simple to set up. While Basic Authentication was the standard at the time, Basic Authentication makes it easier for attackers to capture user credentials, which increases the risk of those stolen credentials being reused against other endpoints or services.

2) Scammers are already trying to take advantage of this change with fake emails like this one…
The emails are coming from @gmail.com accounts and from overseas email accounts as well. They urge you to click on a link, which if you mouse over it or hold your finger on a tablet or phone, will reveal that it'll take you to a Google Docs website, which looks like this…
If you click or tap on the CLICK HERE button, it'll take you to a fake Microsoft Outlook sign-in page (the one I traced was hosted in Montenegro), where you'll be asked to put in your outlook.com email address and password.
If you do, you'll be giving overseas hackers instant access to both your email and your Microsoft account, which they'll use to steal your identity and money. NEVER click on link in emails like this!
3) Watch out for a new round of scam PayPal invoices for items or services which you did not order
The invoices — which are real — come by email from PayPal, and look like the screenshot below…
The scammers are using their PayPal account to generate real invoices for items and services which you did not order. They're hoping you'll call the phone number in the email, which will be answered not by PayPal, but by overseas scammers posing as PayPal, who will offer to cancel the charge.
They'll ask you to let them see your screen so they can help you cancel the charge, and will then get you to log into your PayPal account (and steal your log-in info in the process). But then they'll manipulate what you see so that when you go to 'refund' the fake charge, it'll look like you grossly over-refunded yourself, and then they'll pressure you to send them the difference so they don't get fired.
NEVER click on links in emails like this, and NEVER call the number in an email like this.
PayPal is trying to crack-down on these scams; when you log into your PayPal account, you'll see a yellow-&-black bar across the top warning that this invoice has been reported to be a scam…
If you see one of these invoices in your PayPal account, you can just ignore it, or you can report it to PayPal as being a suspected scam. To do that, go to PayPal.com/ca/security/report-fraud
4) We've created a separate set of "Common Online Scams to Avoid" Notes, which you'll find on our Show Notes home page, and also in the menu-bar at the top of any Notes page.
Feel free to bookmark that page, as we'll keep updating it with screenshots of the latest scams!
A link to those Notes is here: https://Tech-Talk.ca/scams
5) Scammers are impersonating banks to trick you into sending them money.
They'll claim your bank account was compromised, usually "proving" their authenticity by reading you the first 4 digits of your debit card, and trick you into sending them money believing you're transferring funds to yourself. The last 4 digits are worthy of authentication, but most cards from the same financial institution start with the same four numbers. Tech Talk's Kyle Wilson spoke with CTV National News about this August 27th.

10) Apple has unveiled its powerful new flagship iPhone 16 smartphone lineup — and without any price increases
There are, as expected, four new models: the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max. The base models are powered by Apple's new A18 chip, and the Pro models by the new A18 Pro chip, both of which are about 30% faster than the iPhone 15 models which they replace. They all have the thinnest bezels of any iPhone yet, and ceramic glass screens twice as strong as the models they replace.

AppleInsider

Compared: A18 vs A18 Pro -- breaking down what's powering iPhone 16

With the iPhone 16 range, Apple introduced two new chips — the A18 and A18 Pro. Here's what's different between them, and how they compare to older hardware.

As well as all models having better cameras, the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus models have a new vertical lens alignment, and all four models have a new touch-sensitive Capture button on the same side as the sleep/wake button, which makes it easier to take pictures and videos, as well as to much more easily change the zoom, screen ratio, and other settings.
The iPhone 16 and 16 Plus will be in stores in limited quantities on the 20th, but you can pre-order them now; they're the same price as the iPhone 15 models which they replace: $1129 for the iPhone 16 and $1279 for the larger 16 Plus. (iPhone 15 models have been discounted by $120, while iPhone 14 models have been discounted by $280.)

Apple's new iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max are the most-powerful smartphones available, and come with a raft of improvements including the ability to shoot 4K 120 fps Dolby Vision video with four microphones and audio-mix so you can get vastly clearer sound. They have slightly larger screens (6.3" and 6.9"), but with thinner bezels, so the phones themselves are not much larger than current models. They have new 48-megapixel ultra-wide lenses and 5X optical zoom, all powered by the A18 Pro chip which has six graphic cores and six CPU cores, yet run 20% cooler than iPhone 15 Pro models, and with noticably longer battery life.
The iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max will be in stores in limited quantities on the 20th, but you can pre-order them now; they're the same price as the iPhone 15 Pro models which they replace: $1449 for the iPhone 16 Pro and $1749 for the larger 16 Pro Max. Because the performance gains are so substantial this year, Apple has chosen to discontinue the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, rather than discount them.

11) New iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 operating systems will be available to download starting on Monday — but please hold-off for a week!
(Monday update: please do install the just-released iOS/iPadOS 17.7 Security Update, which was not expected, as it fixes 16 security holes.)
Apple's much-anticipated new operating systems for iPhones and iPads will be released on Monday, but the the much-talked-about new Apple Intelligence features will not be coming till iOS/iPadOS 18.2 in December. There are still a lot of useful new features in the 18.0 upgrades, though…
iOS 18 brings to iPhones a dedicated Passwords app, the ability to send texts via satellite, a dedicated Power Off button, phone call recording with real-time transcription and translation, send-later texts, custom emoji's, categorized emails, Emergency SOS live video, a redesigned Photos app with much-faster photo finding, the ability to hide and lock apps as well as photos and folders, plus downloadable trail maps right in the Maps app, and much more.
And the good news is that iPhones as old as the iPhone XR which was released in 2018, and the iPhone SE that came out in 2020, will be able to be upgraded for free to iOS 18 — although Apple cautions that older phones will struggle to run some services and apps.

iPadOS 18 brings most of the new iPhone features to iPads made in the past seven years, plus a worth-the-wait Calculator app (you'll see!), instant transcription and editing of handwritten text, all new ways to customize texts, screen-sharing, an updated Documents browser, and much more…

Activation Lock on iOS 18 will render your iPhone practically useless to a thief.

Although iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 will be available as free upgrades starting on Monday, as tempting as the new features are, we urge you to hold-off downloading the upgrades for now — for two reasons.
1) With more than 250 new features and changes, there are sure to be some bugs, and in the past, some of them have been significant. Apple usually rushes out an update within a week to fix most of them, and we'd recommend you wait until that's been released.
2) So you don't get frustrated, don't download the new operating systems till you've learned about the changes and new features that matter to you. In next week's Show Notes, we'll have a full list of the new features and changes, along with mini-tutorials on how to use them. In the meantime, here's Apple's list of iOS 18 new features and changes…

Apple usually rushes out an update within a week or two to fix the most critical ones, and we recommend you wait at least until that's been released.

13) Apple Watch Series 10 includes Sleep Apnea detection
Apple's new Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 models have bigger screens, are thinner, and have longer battery life. But the new feature that is getting the most attention is their ability to detect sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is estimated to affect more than one billion people worldwide and is linked to a decline in cardiac function, an increased risk for diabetes, and an overall lower quality of life.
To detect sleep apnea, the new Apple Watches (and also Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra models to a lesser degree) will track what they're calling Breathing Disturbances. Breathing Disturbances uses the accelerometer to detect small movements at the wrist associated with interruptions to normal respiratory patterns during sleep. Every 30 days, Apple Watch will analyze breathing disturbance data and notify users if it shows consistent signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea so they can speak to their doctor and formulate a treatment plan.
Apple Watch Series 10 starts at $549 CAD for the WiFi model, and $679 for the WiFi+cell model. The new Ultra 2 model starts at $1099. You can pre-order them now, and they'll be in stores on the 20th.

14) Apple has unveiled two new AirPod 4 models, plus a very major update to its AirPods Pro (second-gen)
The new AirPods 4 come in two models with different features, which may draw some users away from AirPods Pro 2. The key difference is that the new AirPods 4 ANC have Active Noise Cancelling, which up to now was only available in AirPods Pro.
The new base AirPods 4 have a slightly refined shape that Apple says will fit better in even more ears (but still no silicon tips). It also uses the H2 chip and a new acoustic architecture which Apple says sounds even better than 2021’s AirPods 3. You can also now shake your head yes or no to answer or hang up on calls.
The ANC model also has conversation mode to make it easy to chat with people when wearing AirPods with ANC enabled. The case for this model also has a speaker, making it easier to find them when they’re lost using the Find My app.
The AirPods 4 are $179, while the AirPods 4 with ANC are $249.

All the new AirPods announcements from the fall Apple event

Apple has refreshed most of the AirPods in its lineup including the top-end AirtPods Max and the entry level earbuds.

Apple also announced new firmware for the existing AirPods Pro 2. The big deal about them is that later this year, an update will allow you to use them as hearing aids. You put them in your ears and run a special hearing test on your iPhone, and the results are used to change the sound profile of your iPhone so you can more easily hear and understand people around you, as well as to music and other audio playing through your AirPods Pro. The update to make all this happen will be arriving later this fall.
Finally, the over-ear AirPods Max will finally change from using a Lightning port to a USB-C port, along with some new colour options. They are otherwise unchanged from the previous model, and still sell for $779.
15) New iPads and M4 Macs expected to be announced next month
As many had predicted, Apple did not unveil any new iPads or Mac computers at it's "Glowtime" event this past week. Those are expected to be unveiled at another event sometime in October.
A new budget iPhone — likely be be called iPhone SE 2025 — not expected till next March, and when it is unveiled, all indications are that it'll be the same shape and size as an iPhone 14, with Face ID.

AppleInsider

Macs and iPads -- What to expect from Apple for the rest of 2024

Apple's iPhone 16 "Glowtime" event may be over, but there's still time left in the year for more product launches. Here's what Apple is expected to reveal before the end of 2024.

16) Updated: we now have a new, much-cheaper option for home internet and TV service
Freedom Mobile is now offering home Internet and TV service here, at prices well below what Telus and Rogers are charging — but you have to be a Freedom Mobile susbcriber to be eligible.
When Quebec-based Vidéotron bought Freedom Mobile as part of the Rogers buyout of Shaw, they also bought IPTV firm VMedia, and that company has developed their TV app. Freedom is also wholesaling Rogers internet in this area, and also Telus and Bell internet back east.
Freedom's home internet prices range from $39/month for Internet 25, to $90/month for Gigabit (Internet 1000), with the best value (for individuals) being Internet 75 for $50/month.
There's no activation fee, and no contract, and the package includes a Hitron modem and a small eero 6 Wi-Fi router (shown here), which will cover most condos and small homes.
Extra routers for larger homes are $5/month.
Service is available anywhere in Greater Victoria serviced by Shaw/Rogers.
You can get more info on Freedom Home Internet at www.freedommobile.ca/en-CA/home-internet
Freedom's TV service is IPTV (Internet Protocol TV), which means you don't get a TV box. You instead access the service via an app on your smart TV, or via a TV plug-in like an Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, or Amazon Fire stick. No contract or credit check as its a prepaid service.
Not having to supply set-top boxes is allowing Freedom to offer much lower prices than Telus and Rogers: $10/month for Starter TV which gives you at least 23 HD channels, including all major Canadian and US networks. If you want sports, that's just $19/month more. News & entertainment channels are $20/month. Or, you can order just the channels you want for $3 per channel per month or 10 for $17.50 ($1.75/channel), or 20 for $30/month ($1.50/channel).
I've created a PDF of the pricing options for both Freedom home internet and TV

Update: If you're happy with your current mobile service and don't want to switch to Freedom Mobile in order to get their much-more-affordable home internet and/or TV service, or if you don't have a cellphone, you can sign-up for Freedom's $5/month mobile plan, and just never use it.
17) Virgin+ and Koodo have now both followed the lead of Fido and increased plan rates by $5/month, while reducing data allotments
Budget mobile brands owned by the big three carriers — Bell-owned Virgin+, Telus-owned Koodo, and Rogers-owned Fido have now, one after another, increased the price of most of their mainstream plans by $5/month, while at the same time, reducing the amount of data in each plan.
For example, their 50GB plans that were $39/month, are now $44/month and only come with 20GB.
Quebec-based Freedom Mobile continues to be a much-better deal…
Freedom is currently offering 50GB for $35/month, and that also includes unlimited calling across Canada and to the USA and Mexico, plus data roaming in USA and Mexico, and unlimited calling back to Canada from those two countries, as well as unlimited global texting.
For $5/month more, you can get 75GB of data, plus 10GB of data and unlimited local and back-to-Canada calling good in 92 countries.

18) Where to recycle small home appliances and tools for free
You can take electronics for recycling for free at Return-It bottle depots, and to stores like London Drugs, but what about small appliances and power tools that are not fixable?
You can now take them for recycling for free at 230 locations across BC, including 10 locations here in Greater Victoria. You'll find a list of what you can recycle, and where, at ElectroRecycle.ca.

19) Freedom Mobile is offering 30-day "Roam Beyond" passes that let you use your phone in either 92 or 101 countries
The passes, which can be added onto any Freedom Mobile plan, give you unlimited calling in the included countries and back to Canada, plus unlimited global texting, and either 1GB or 5GB of data in the included countries.
The passes are good for 30 days from the time of issue, and cost $20 for 1GB of data, or $30 for 5 GB good in 92 countries.
The latest additions are Costa Rica, Finland, Isle of Man, Japan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Norway, Philippines, Poland, South Korea, and Sri Lanka.
If where you're headed is not included in the 92-country list, there's also a 101-country Roam Beyond pass ($30 for 1GB or $50 for 5GB) which adds service in nine more countries: Belarus, British Virgin Islands, Cyprus, Denmark, Macao, Malta, Mongolia, Montenegro, and the UAE.

20) United Airlines is adding free Starlink Wi-Fi to all of its planes
In a partnership with Elon Musk's Starlink, United Airlines will be offering free WiFi to passengers in all classes on all its planes starting next year.
Starlink says it'll be able to provide 220Mbps service to planes, which United says should allow passengers to do pretty much anything on flights that they can do on the ground.

23) Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 tablets likely to launch on Sep. 26
Multiple sources suggest that Samsung will unveil their Galaxy Tab S10+ and S10 Ultra tablets on September 26th…but there'll no longer be a base S10, just + and Ultra models.
The Galaxy S10 Ultra is expected to sport a 12.4" OLED panel with a MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ octa-core processor, stereo speakers, and an S-Pen stylus. The base model will also sport 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, whereas the most expensive model features 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.
They won't be cheap…the S10+ is expected to start at $1,679 CAD, while the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra will start at a whopping $2,000 CAD!

24) "Flappy Bird" resurrection appears to just be a crypto ploy
On Thursday, a group of alleged "Flappy Bird fans" announced that they were about to revive the decade-dead global hit.
While many were excited, an equal amount seemed skeptical. And, as it turns out, there was a good reason for the skepticism, as the relaunch appears designed to hock cryptocurrency.
Hidden pages on the Flappy Bird website show heavy references to Web 3, micro-transactions, and the cryptocurrency Solana. Fans also found a playable version of the game with a leaderboard filled with crypto-based usernames. The playable version references a $FLAP token.
