The annual Times Colonist Book Sale is on this weekend!
Book-lovers take note: the 2024 Times Colonist book sale is this weekend.
A small army of volunteers have been busy sorting the donations in preparation for the sale, taking place Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5, at the Victoria Curling Club, 1952 Quadra Street.
Doors will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and 9-5 on Sunday. More info is below…

Times Colonist

Jack Knox: The TC book sale is this weekend. Here's what you need to know

Get ready, book lovers — it’s book sale weekend! Here are 27 things to know about the 27th Times Colonist book sale, on this weekend at the Victoria Curling Club.

Security and Privacy News
1) Watch out for scam Costco emails offering memberships for $2 a year
The emails, which look like the screenshot here, are coming from email accounts in Germany (.de), and say you can save 95% if you answer three questions.
If you hover your mouse over the "Claim Now" button on the actual email (or hold your finger on the button on a phone or tablet), you'll see that button will take you to a fake Costco webpage (footballswap.de) also in Germany.
Answer three basic demographic questions and you'll be taken to a (fake) Costco membership renewal page, where they'll want you to give them your membership number and password, plus your credit card info to pay the "$2 loyalty discount renewal fee".
If you give them that info, they'll try to buy things on your Costco account, and at the same time, they'll start racking-up fake charges on your credit card.
NEVER click on links in emails like this!
2) Watch out for fake "Your iCloud Storage is full" emails
The emails, which look like the screenshot below, are coming from email addresses in France (.fr), and are addressed to the first part of your email address, and "Dear iCloud user"…
They list your iCloud account as being the first part of your email address @email.com!
The scam email also says in one place that you've used 5GB of your 5GB iCloud storage, but down below says you've used 19,68GB of your 20GB iCloud storage.
If you hover your mouse over the "Upgrade my storage" text on the actual email (or hold your finger on the button on a phone or tablet), you'll see that button will take you to a fake iCloud log-in page (hosted at dailycare.skin.es) which is in Spain.
They'll ask you for your Apple ID email address and password, along with your credit card info to pay "just $5" get more storage. If you give them that info, two things will happen…
One, they'll see if that password is the same password you use for your email account, so they can steal your identity, and two, they'll start racking-up fake charges on your credit card.
NEVER click on links in emails like this!
If you have an Apple device and want to see how full your iCloud storage is, on your iPhone or iPad, go to Settings, (your name), iCloud, and it'll show you how much you've used and how much you've got left.
3) Watch out for creative fake PayPal "payment request" emails
The emails look like the screenshot below (shared by astute Tech Talk listener Monica), and are coming from service@intl.paypal.com, and employ a sneaky reverse-psychology twist…
They show you a hefty $799 USD payment request, and say, "If you don't recognize it, don't engage with this request", and give you a phone number to call. That number — the one in this email is a Provo, Utah number — will route your call to a call-centre in India, where a scammer posing as PayPal will offer to block the payment, but will need you to give them your PayPal account email address or user name, and password.
If you give them that info, they'll log into your PayPal account, change your password so you can't get in, and then start transferring money to themselves! NEVER call phone numbers in emails like this!
If you want to check payment requests, open the PayPal app, or go directly to PayPal.com.
4) Saturday afternoon update: One week after suffering a massive cyber-attack, London Drugs stores are gradually re-opening.
London Drugs was hit by a major cyber-attack last Sunday, and immediately closed all of its more than 80 stores. Now, six days later, London Drugs is gradually re-opening core services in stores, taking the time with each store to ensure systems are working securely.
Here's a list, which is being regularly updated, showing which stores have re-opened…

London Drugs

Sites-LondonDrugs-Site

As we gradually reopen stores, click here for specific locations that are open.

London Drugs says its store systems are complex and connect with multiple third-party provider systems, all with different requirements. They're continuing to work with third-party cybersecurity experts to bring systems online in a safe and secure manner. This is a time-consuming process and, rather than delay until all services and systems are fully available, they've re-opened core services in some stores to meet the healthcare and everyday needs of customers as soon as possible.
The company says it'll be bringing other services and systems on board as soon as reconnection work is complete, and they are fully operational.
The impact of the incident on operations has been significant (the chain has been suffering almost $8 million a day in lost sales), and the restoration process is rigorous, with literally billions of lines of data and computer code to review.
COO Clint Mahlman says so far, there is no evidence of any customer databases — including pharmacy patients and LDExtras members — being compromised…

5) Google paid Apple $20 billion USD in 2022 to be the default iPhone, iPad, and Mac search engine.
Here's an indication of how much your search history is worth…Google paid Apple $20 billion in 2022 to be Safari’s default search engine on all Mac products.
That figure is in court documents filed ahead of closing arguments in the US Department of Justice's antitrust case against Google. It’s the first time the number has been confirmed, and marks an increase from the $18 billion which Google paid in 2021.
Google’s payments made up a whopping 17.5% of Apple’s operating income.

AppleInsider

Google paid Apple $20 Billion to be default search engine in 2022

The ongoing antitrust lawsuit against Alphabet by the Justice Department has revealed that Google paid Apple a staggering $20 billion in 2022 for default search engine status.

6) If a message appears on the screen of your phone, tablet, or computer advising that your device is infected or is about to crash, and urging you to call the phone number on the screen, it's a scam.
Here's an iPad screenshot of what one of these scams looks like…
If this appears on the screen, it got there because you clicked on a button or link which took you to what's called a Browser Hijack — a website which has been crafted to try to trick you. Your device is NOT infected. It's just a scam. If you call the number, it'll connect you to a call-centre (often in India) where a scammer will pose as someone from Apple or Microsoft or Samsung or Google, and will offer to fix the problem, either for a hefty fee — they'll want your credit card info — or they'll try to pursuade you to give them banking info. NEVER call the number, and NEVER click on the button or link. Just restart your phone, tablet, or computer and it should go away.
7) Here's an easy way to avoid being scammed:
If you get an email or a text about a problem with an account or service, or about a package that can't be delivered, or an invoice/receipt for an item or service you didn't order, or about a refund owed to you, or about a prize you've won, assume it's a scam, especially if it urges you do something right away.
If you think it might be real, check with your bank, or with the merchant, but NEVER call the number, and NEVER click on the button or link.

10) Apple will be unveiling new iPads (early) this coming Tuesday
Apple has scheduled an online "Let Loose" event for 7am PDT on Tuesday, May 7, where it's expected several new iPad models will be unveiled.
We're expecting two new significantly-more-powerful iPad Pro models (10.9" and 12.9") with OLED screens, as well as two new also more-powerful iPad Air models.
There'll likely also be a more-powerful base-model iPad, as well as a new Apple Pencil with a squeeze-trigger and possibly interchangeable tips, and a new Magic Keypad. A new iPad mini is NOT expected at this time.

AppleInsider

What to expect from Apple's 'Let Loose' special event on May 7

Apple is holding a special event on May 7 that will most likely focus on new models of the iPad Air and iPad Pro. Here's what to expect from the "Let Loose" event.

AppleInsider

What isn't coming at Apple's 'Let Loose' event

While Apple's "Let Loose" event is to be dedicated to the iPad, there will be more — and yet there are also many devices Apple will hold back for later.

You can catch the event live on Apple's website, apple.com at the scheduled event time at 7:00am Pacific this coming Tuesday… YouTube.com/live/f1J38FlDKxo?si=NLB259KUZ8QROO35
You can also watch the event through the Apple TV app, which is available on Apple devices and most smart TVs, streaming boxes, and gaming consoles.
If you're in the market for a new iPad, we recommend you wait for the new models, as they're all expected to be noticably more-powerful, and will likely be the same price as the hard-to-find current models, or possibly just $10 to $20 more.
11) Updated: if you owned an iPhone 6, 7, or original SE, submit a claim for a share of Apple's $14.4 million Canadian "Batterygate" settlement
The class action website will be accepting claim submissions up until Sep. 2. The claim link is below…
Lawyers who launched the class action claiming Apple slowed down those phones to keep them from crashing when running newer more power-hungry operating systems, say claimants will be eligible to get between $17.50 and $150, depending on how many people apply.
To get a share of the $14.4 million, the Claim Form requires you to provide, among other things, your name, mailing address, iPhone serial number, and to declare under oath that you had one of the iPhones in question, and that you experienced diminished performance on that device after you updated it to the latest operating system. That last part is key — the #1 reason people are having their claim rejected, is because Apple says their iPhone was not updated before Apple started telling people about the throttling.
The eligible devices and iOS versions are the following:
· iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, or original SE that ran iOS 10.2.1 or later before December 21, 2017;
· iPhone 7 and 7 Plus that ran iOS 11.2 or later before December 21, 2017.
Around nine million of the affected models were sold here in Canada, but most will not be able to provide the serial number needed to get compensation. If you bought one of the covered iPhone models directly from Apple, you can use their free Apple Support app to speak with someone from Apple to obtain the serial number.

Apple Support

Find the serial number or IMEI on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (CA)

Learn how to find the serial number, IMEI/MEID, CDN, and ICCID on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

If you can't read the whole serial number, you need to (temporarily) shrink the text display size. To do that, go to Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size, Larger Text, and drag the slider at the bottom to the left at least a few dots to make the text smaller. Then return to Settings, General, About and copy down the Serial Number. You might want to also take a screenshot, or take a picture of the screen using a newer phone.
One of the reasons we've discovered some eligible iPhones are showing an ineligible is that they were purchased from a carrier (such as Telus, Bell, Rogers, etc.). Some carrier devices, for some reason, do not have a validated purchase date according to Apple, even though they were activated within the valid date period.
If your iPhone serial number comes up as being not valid, and you're sure it's correct, you can fill out the paper claim form below and email it to the Claims Administrators at info@SmartphonePerformanceSettlement.ca.

12) The national Emergency Alert System will be tested here in BC this coming Wednesday at 10:55am PDT.
As part of Emergency Preparedness Week here in BC, an emergency alert test will be issued to cellphones, television and radio at 10:55 a.m. (Pacific time) this coming Wednesday, May 8.
The test alert will go to all compatible cellphones, and will interrupt radio and TV broadcasts. This test will assess the system’s readiness for an actual emergency and identify any required adjustments.
Within a few months, Natural Resources Canada will launch the Canada Earthquake Early Warning System, which includes issuing emergency alerts. Earthquake early-warning systems rapidly detect earthquakes and can provide crucial seconds of warning before the strong shaking arrives.

Emergency alert test coming to cellphones, TV, radio

As part of Emergency Preparedness Week, an emergency alert test will be issued to cellphones, television and radio at 10:55 a.m. (Pacific time) on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.

If you have a compatible cellphone (flip phones don't count), and don't get the Emergency Alert test on Wednesday, you can let officials know at https://peasi.com/emergency-alert-test-survey.html
13) You can again use tunes from UMG artists on TikTok
Three months after a royalty dispute saw Universal Music Group blocked TikTok users from using tunes by its artists including Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Drake, Billie Eilish, Bad Bunny and many more, the two have reached a deal and UMG music can again be used on TikTok videos.
The companies say the new deal improves compensation for Universal Music Group songwriters and artists, and TikTok will also remove unauthorized music generated by AI on its platform.

14) Spotify is now making you pay to see song lyrics on-screen
After a few months of testing, Spotify is now making users upgrade to $11/month Spotify Premium if you want to continue singing along to scrolling on-screen lyrics.

Android Authority

More Spotify users will now have to pay for lyrics

Many Spotify users are complaining about needing to pay for the Premium tier in order to access the previously-free lyrics feature.

If you don't want to pay to see lyrics, you can switch to the YouTube Music app, which is free (but with ads), and also allows for unlimited song skips and skippable ads. Be aware that the more ads you skip, though, the more ads you'll get! As with YouTube itself, we recommend you only skip ads longer than 30 seconds, and tolerate the shorter ones!
15) Safari, Siri, and Spotlight Search will be first in line to get AI enhancements in iOS 18 this fall
When iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS are unveiled at Apple's WorldWide Developer Conference in early June, several of Apple's standard system components will be getting significant AI-related enhancements, starting with Siri and Safari.

16) If you're going to the Paris Olympics, France has been added back into Freedom Mobile's 81-country "Roam Beyond" plan
Last November, Freedom Mobile became the first Canadian phone provider to offer a global roaming plan called "Roam Beyond". It originally covered 71 countries, then 73 countries, and starting in February, 81 countries! But in March, France was dropped from the country list, presumably because their French service partner didn't need the extra business with the Paris Olympics coming.
Freedom Mobile has now switched partners in France, and France is back on the 81-country list.
Freedom Mobile has also introduced a cheaper $45/month version of its 81-country Roam Beyond international roaming plan.
For a limited time, you can get 15GB of 5G data per month, plus unlimited calling and texting to, from, and within the 81 countries, as well as 5G data roaming in those 81 countries.
You have to be on this plan for at least three months, and there's a $30 fee if you want to switch to a cheaper plan after that. This plan is available for a limited time only, but Freedom will honour the rate as long as you remain subscribed to it.
If you want more data, you can upgrade to their $65/month plan which gets you 60GB/month.

Freedom Mobile

Freedom Mobile | Affordable International Roaming Plans & Packages

Our affordable Big Gig Roam Extra provides you with extra data for roaming and includes unlimited global texting and unlimited local calls and calls back to Canada.

If there's a country that's really important to you, we suggest you call 611 before you subscribe, to find out if there are any cities not covered. For example, in India, Freedom's mobile partner there, Jio, currently does not offer service in Delhi or Mumbai. They're working to switch to a different partner to rectify that.
If you're going to be away for less than a couple months, you could instead buy a Roam Beyond Pass, which is good for 30 days…
A 1GB roaming pass is $20 and good for 30 days in the same 81 countries, while a 5GB roaming pass is $30. Or you can buy the new 97 country pass which is $30 for 1 GB or $50 for 5GB, both good for 30 days. The 97-country Pass adds coverage for Belarus, British Virgin Islands, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Denmark, France, Isle of Man, Macao, Malta, Martinique, Mongolia, Montenegro, Nigeria, Portugal, South Korea, Sri Lanka, and the United Arab Emirates. On either option, you could buy a second pass if you'll be travelling for more than 30 days. Panama and Honduras are not included in either pass.
17) Freedom Mobile is now offering hefty discounts on almost-new iPhones that have been returned within the mandatory 14-day "change your mind" window
If you buy a new smartphone here in Canada, by law, you have 14 days to bring it back if you want a different model, or find a better deal elsewhere, or just change your mind. Freedom Mobile has now started selling those returned iPhones — after they're tested and factory reset — for hefty discounts…
Fido is also selling iPhones returned within two weeks, but their prices are higher: an iPhone 14 at Fido would be $25/month for 24 months on a $44/month plan (total $69/month), compared to $20/month for 24 months on a $39/month plan (total $59/month) at Freedom.
An iPhone 12 at Fido would be $11/month for 24 months on a $44/month plan (total $55/month), compared to $5/month for 24 months on a $39/month plan (total $44/month) at Freedom.
18) Freedom Mobile is delaying Apple Watch Nationwide Roaming
Freedom Mobile says a "technical constraint" is preventing it, for now, from enabling owners of cell-model Apple Watches from staying connected when they're out of range of a Freedom tower.
Freedom had annouced a few months ago that it was expanding Apple Watch coverage across Canada, to let Apple Watch owners roam across Canada at no extra cost on the Rogers network, until it has its own nationwide network built.
As part of the deal that saw Rogers sell Freedom to Vidéotron when it bought Shaw, Rogers agreed to let Freedom customers roam for up to 10 years — three years here in Western Canada — at no cost onto Rogers' network when beyond the range of a Freedom tower, while Freedom builds its own 5G network.
But, Freedom now says it's having to temporarily delay that Apple Watch nationwide service expansion, wihout giving any details as to why. Freedom says it “deeply regrets” the inconvenience, and is giving users an extra 5GB of total data to use, while it comes up with a solution (which is likely something contractural with Rogers).
This may be the sticking-point with Rogers: subscribing to a cellular plan for Apple Watch costs $10/month on Freedom Mobile on top of a wireless plan, while it’s $15/month from Rogers, Telus, and Bell.
19) Congratulations to inventor and former NASA engineer Mark Rober, who now has more than 50 million YouTube subscribers!
In response to a YouTube short which he posted a month ago, seeking new subscribers to get him to 50 million, 2.8 million more people subscribed, pushing him to 50.1 million.
He's now #48 on YouTube's most popular channel list, and only 12 behind Taylor Swift!
His videos are thought to earn him just shy of $1 million a month in YouTube ad-revenue sharing.
20) LastPass has gone independent, but the password management software maker has a long way to go to rebuild trust
More than a year and a half after LastPass admitted to having suffered massive back-to-back hacks that saw even client's master passwords stolen, LastPass has broken away from its former parent company in a bid to chart a new path forward.
in January, LastPass started enforcing a 12-character minimum for master passwords for new customers and existing ones when resetting. This is considered the industry minimum for decent security, and although LastPass already defaulted to 12 characters, it would let customers set shorter passwords anyway, which, among other issues, security experts widely panned following its dual breaches.
The company seems to be trying to show it’s reformed. It says it's established a “dedicated threat intelligence team”, and its recently hired executives including a former McAfee VP. But it’s still under the same CEO, Karim Toubba, who ran the company when it revealed the truth about its 2022 breach in bits and pieces over several months.

21) T-Mobile buys Ryan Reynolds’ Mint Mobile for $1.35 billion USD
This likely spells the end of Reynolds' effort to bring Mint Mobile Canada.
The $1.35 billion USD deal (about $1.85 billion CAD) deal also gives T-Mobile USA smaller mobile service providers Ultra Mobile and Plum.
The US FTC approved the sale after T-Mobile agreed to allow existing Mint customers to switch providers for 60 days after the acquisition. T-Mobile also agreed to keep Mint’s $15/month deal for new and existing customers, although it only committed to this “through the end of the year.”
Reynolds, who owned 25% of the company and acted as its public face, is expected to take home at least $300 million USD (about $412 million CAD) as part of the deal.

23) Microsoft has launched three free games on LinkedIn — yes, you read that correctly, on LinkedIn!
Going after the Wordle crowd, Microsoft’s business-focused social media platform now lets you play the puzzle games Pinpoint, Queens, and Crossclimb  on desktop and mobile. These test your skills in word association, logic and trivia, respectively.

24) Apple set a new record for live services revenue last quarter
Apple's Q2 2024 earning report shows the company’s revenue hit $90.8 billion USD (about $124.1 billion CAD), which is down 4% year-over-year.
It appears that doesn’t matter, though, as Apple stock has risen 10% in value since the news, gaining back more than all the ground it had lost earlier thsi year.
This is likely based on the company’s new record for its live services revenue.
In the new report, Apple says it made $23.87 billion USD (about $32.5 billion CAD) off live services, which is up around $3 billion from last year's Q2.
This is big news for Apple, which has been working to grow its live services with things like Apple TV, iCloud and Apple Music. These are important to Apple since they offer a more consistent form of revenue compared to selling hardware like iPhones and MacBooks.

25) Apple Watch has become the US FDA's first-ever approved digital AFib history device
The FDA has approved the Apple Watch's atrial fibrillation history feature under its stringent Medical Device Development Tools program that specifies what devices health professionals can rely on.
Apple Watch has had an atrial fibrillation feature since 2022, and since then, it has been credited with saving lives, including those of numerous people who previously had no reason to suspect they had severe heart problems.
The FDA has now also approved the Apple Watch's AFib history feature for its Medical Device Development Tools (MDDT) program. This makes the Apple Watch the first digital health technology to qualify under MDDT for a non-invasive way of estimating atrial fibrillation.

27) Pennsylviania priest arrested after blowing $40,000 of church funds on Candy Crush and Mario Kart
A Catholic priest in Pennsylvania used a parish credit card to fund his addiction to such cell phone games as Candy Crush and Mario Kart, racking up more than $40,000 in expenses over the course of three years.
The priest says he's getting counselling to overcome his video game addiction, but insists the money was not spent on gambling, but rather to “power up” — gain an advantage in the games he was playing.
